Music learning, practice, and performance have many aspects that are comparable to everyday situations encountered in personal and professional life. The way a musician navigates these situations can inspire solutions that enhance the quality of learning and execution. Exposure to various art forms and interaction with artists from diverse fields and backgrounds broaden students’ perspectives and provide insight into how creative professionals shape their journeys over time. Such interactions guide students as they stand at the threshold of their own creative and professional paths.
The session will begin with a Sarod recital by Anupam Joshi, accompanied by Anirudh Shankar on Tabla. A brief introduction and synopsis of the repertoire will be shared to help students and audience members understand the sequence and nature of musical exploration at each stage of the performance.
Following the performance, Anupam Joshi will speak about the sarod and its evolution, tracing the fascinating events that led to its present form. In a fireside chat format, he will share experiences from his unconventional journey in music and languages, discussing challenges faced and how persistence, mindful decision-making, clarity, and purpose helped him navigate uncertain paths. Audience members will be encouraged to ask questions and engage in discussion with the artist.
Anupam Joshi is a dedicated sarod maestro known for his deep commitment to Indian classical music. He belongs to the Maihar Gharana and the musical lineage of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar. He received advanced training from Pt. Sohan Neelkanth and later studied under Padma Shri Pt. Rajeev Taranath and Padma Shri Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, two of the most senior disciples of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
Alongside his career as a sarod player, Anupam Joshi has pursued an extensive study of the Japanese language and culture for over fifteen years. His work reflects a strong interest in cross-cultural understanding and creative exchange beyond music. He is also an eloquent speaker with a natural ability to connect with students, creating meaningful impact through lived experiences and innovative interaction.
Anirudh Shankar is an alumnus of Sri Kumaran Children’s Home (CBSE) and has been learning tabla since the age of four. He currently trains under Pt. Nishikant Barodekar, a senior disciple of Ustad Allah Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, and also studies Carnatic rhythm under Vidushi Sukanya Ramgopal, a senior disciple of Vidwan Vikku Vinayakaram.
With experience accompanying artists across Hindustani, Carnatic, and Jazz–Fusion genres, Anirudh brings a broad rhythmic perspective to performance and learning. An architect by training and a graduate of CEPT University, Ahmedabad, he has since transitioned fully into music. Through his recording studio, TimbreWorld in Pune, he actively works to document, curate, and present music thoughtfully, focusing on taking honest music to the next generation of audiences.
